About the artist -
Yu Nagaba (b. 1976, Tokyo, Japan) has become well-known for his now signature style featuring black and white lines only. His work features motifs from art, movies and music that he encountered during and after his childhood and is strongly influenced by art history and American 90’s culture. He has collaborated with the likes of the Louvre Museum and Uniqlo on an apparel collaboration featuring the artist’s take on art historical works from the museum’s collection as well as Pokémon and Converse. The new limited edition print he is creating with Avant Arte explores the artist’s love of French artist Matisse whilst incorporating contemporary elements from the artist’s daily life. The Ace Hotel stamp, which has become a signature of Yu Nagaba's work, also features. The inclusion of the stamp in his work is inspired by Nagaba’s childhood memory of his father’s business trips abroad and how he would bring back mementoes for his son from the hotels that he stayed in. Additionally, the stamp also evokes a fictional story imagined by the artist - it’s a story of an anonymous artist who, when staying at the hotel, always leaves his drawing on a hotel’s memo pad.
Yu Nagaba stated: “This is the first time I’ve released my work as an open edition, so I am very nervous and excited at the same time! I hope many people get the chance to own, feel close to, and enjoy my artwork through this release.”
